Russ Bogdan is a classically inspired painter who's subjects include figures, portraits and landscapes. While he is influenced by a variety European masters from past centuries, his draftsmanship is rooted in early Italian art. With much of the aesthetics of that period now ignored or virtually lost, Russ continues his passionate exploration into the language of classical art prior to its decline in the 19th Century. A fundamental concept of this language that is generally misunderstood today is 'form drawing' and its association with sculpture which Russ has also practiced extensively.

His figure drawings are appealing to collectors who appreciate the delicacy of smaller works. Their subtle transparency and graceful refinement give them a timeless quality. They are currently exhibited at Susan Calloway's gallery in Washington, DC. www.callowayart.com

His landscape paintings have a more contemporary flare to them and are inspired by the French Barbizon painters as well as the American, George Inness. They are done primarily on location ('plein-air') with occasional adjustments in the studio from memory.

In executing his mural size canvases, what often sets Russ apart from others is his vast knowledge of historic methods which he combines with original vision. He is able to skillfully balance illusion with nature to create scenes that embody a unique blend of painterly qualities, dynamic design and deep atmosphere.

Russ began his career as an architectural illustrator before going on to study drawing and painting under Ann Shuler at the Schuler School and Kurt Wenner through the Smithsonian Institute. Proud of his Euro-American heritage and compelled by the grand, romantic art of the past, he moved to Europe for a year and a half to study art independently while funding his way through art commissions. After returning to the states he continued a rigorous training program which included four years of sculpture study at Brad Parker's studio. Russ now operates his own studio in Wasington, DC.

In addition to exhibiting in shows, he has created numerous artworks for galleries, designers and commercial film as well as for private collectors internationally, including the United States Capital. He has also been featured in International Artists Magazine and has taught classes through the Smithsonian Institute and the Corcoran.
